Pacific Northwest Beers
April 19, 2003

Listen to this feature (How to listen)

Beer expert Steven Beaumont, who tracks beers all over the world, says two truly great beer cities are in the Pacific Northwest: Seattle, Washington, and Portland, Oregon, with Portland having more breweries per capita than anywhere else in the United States.

The year 2003 is a good one for domestic beers, and these Pacific Northwest brewing companies, brew pubs and restaurants feature some of the best:

In Portland, Oregon:

Bridgeport Brewing Company and Bridgeport Brew Pub
1313 NW Market Street
Portland, OR
503-241-7179
503-241-3612
One of the earliest craft breweries features excellent British-style ales.

Portland Brewing Company
2730 NW 31st Avenue
Portland, OR
503-228-8265
Maker of the wonderful Black Watch Porter that Steve thinks is one of the most underrated beers. There is a good restaurant here, too.

McCormick and Schmick's Seafood Restaurant
235 SW 1st Avenue
Portland, OR
503-224-7522
Yes, it's a chain restaurant, but this one has a "Pilsner Room" operated by Full Sail Brewing Company. The beautiful location on the waterfront invites you to linger, sip lagers and eat good food.

Higgin's Restaurant
1239 SW Broadway
Portland, OR
503-222-9070
One of the first places in the country to match beer with food, Higgin's offers fine dining as well.

In Seattle, Washington:

Seattle is a great town for bar-hopping—there are a number of good ones serving excellent local brews on tap in nearly every neighborhood.

Washington's Yakima Valley is the largest hop growing area in the country and the locals love "hoppy" beers.

Elysian Brewing Company
1221 East Pike Street
Seattle, WA
206-860-1920
Steve says the brewpub here is great.
