David Rosengarten's Sources for Indian Food Products and Pantry Staples
August 2, 2003

Listen to this feature (How to listen)

David Rosengarten has the enviable job of traveling the world tasting and testing his way through countless food products in search of the freshest and best. He chronicles his finds in his newsletter, The Rosengarten Report.

For David, Indian food ranks right up there with French, Italian, and Chinese as favorite cuisines. He recently shared some of his favorite products and sources for Indian pantry items.

Chutney and Pickles: The Home-Made Lime Pickle and Hot Mango Chutney made by the folks at Kalustyan's are David's top picks. He says they are the "freshest and most delicious condiments for retail sale that you can find in America."

Snack Mix: The Shamiana Punjabi Mix, made with chick pea crisps, legumes, cashews, peanuts and other things is hot and tastes very deep-fried, but it's surprisingly light-feeling.

Pappadam: The crisp, round, ultra-thin wafers made from lentil flour or rice flour are called "papads" in India. It's the first thing to appear on your table in Indian restaurants. David's pick is the Shri Mahila Griha Voyog Lijjat Jeera Papad flavored with cumin that he buys at Namaste.
